Understanding Video Aspect Ratios
An aspect ratio is simply the proportional relationship between a video's width and its height. Getting this wrong before you render a video in Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve is a nightmare, as it leads to ugly black bars (letterboxing) or stretched faces.
The Standard 16:9 Landscape
This is the default aspect ratio for YouTube, cinematic screens, and standard monitors. If you want HD quality, your pixels need to match this ratio.
- 720p: 1280 x 720
- 1080p (Full HD): 1920 x 1080
- 1440p (2K): 2560 x 1440
- 2160p (4K): 3840 x 2160
The Rise of 9:16 Vertical Video
TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels have made the 9:16 aspect ratio completely dominant for mobile consumption. If you are repurposing a standard 1080p YouTube video for Shorts, you must crop the center of the frame and render it at 1080 x 1920 pixels.
Creating YouTube Shorts?
If you are working in a 9:16 ratio for Shorts, you need to be extremely careful where you place text and graphics. The right side and bottom of a YouTube Short are covered by UI buttons (Like, Subscribe, Description). Use our Shorts Safe Zone Viewer to make sure your text isn't being covered.
